Situation
As a UX designer specializing in digital fashion, I leverage my expertise in product design and UX design concepts to transform research findings into practical and impactful solutions.
The current project centers around utilizing the research results from combining the spatial technology and digital fashion to tackle significant challenges in the fashion industry.
Current State ()
Sequential Processes of Garment Manufacturing:
Fashion design and pattern design are sequential processes involving iterative adjustments and sample construction.
Product development generates design sketches, production patterns, and markers for cutting and sewing operations.
Engineered Patterns:
Engineered patterns involve careful placement of clothing pattern pieces during marker planning.
Matching prints along seams create a continuous design flow and enhance the luxurious and elegant perception of garments.
key challenges in the garment manufacturing process, specifically related to engineered patterns and their limitations
Problem Statement
Inconsistent Print Size: Engineered patterns currently lack scalability, resulting in print sizes that remain the same regardless of the garment size. This leads to potential inconsistencies in the design.
Lower Fabric Utilization and Increased Material Costs: Matching prints along seams in engineered patterns decrease fabric utilization and raise material costs. This issue arises due to the careful placement of pattern pieces during marker planning, resulting in irregular geometrical shapes.
Design Complexity and Printing Constraints: Aligning intricate patterns across garment panels poses a significant design complexity. Printing constraints, including specialized equipment, techniques, and ink formulations, further add to the challenges faced.
Higher Production Costs and Fabric Waste: The intricacy of engineered patterns leads to higher production costs due to additional labor and specialized requirements. Moreover, larger fabric panels are needed for pattern alignment, resulting in increased waste during the cutting process.
Time Constraints and Limited Resources: Complex patterns and limited resources impose time constraints on the garment manufacturing process. This can hinder productivity and efficiency.
Quality Control Variations: Variations in printing, color, and pattern alignment require meticulous quality control measures to ensure consistent and high-quality final products.
Opportunities
We identified key problems in the garment manufacturing process related to engineered patterns. We see this as an opportunity to provide a technical service that offers cost-effective and high-quality final seamless print designs.
Designers can benefit from affordable options without compromising on the quality and aesthetics of their garments.
